Technological advances have dramatically affected human security in recent years. The proliferation of social media platforms, greater access to information, and ease of coordination have allowed violent movements to reach far greater audiences and attract supporters at levels that were unimaginable just a decade or two ago. What makes extremist groups successful in online spaces? How do hate groups use social media for recruitment? And how effective are emerging efforts to prevent violent extremism, both online and offline? This talk will discuss the rapid growth in online extremism and Internet-enabled terrorism, and what can be done to prevent it.
